Disabled characters on children's shows

You do everything you can to help your child succeed: you advocate for them at school, you make sure they’re doing their therapies, and you drive them to all their doctor’s appointments. You dedicate so much of your time and effort to them.

Luckily, in your busy schedule, there is one thing that is definitely not your job, and that is being an example of how to live with a disability. You may ask, of all the things in the world, why is this so important? It’s important because it shows kids they matter. Representation shows kids that they can be in relationships, have jobs, and have an effect on the world. It shows them they can dream big and succeed at what they want to do. Positive representation in media helps kids develop a positive identity.

The Mighty created a wonderful round-up of children’s shows featuring disabled characters. They asked people with disabilities for their recommendations to make this list, so you can have some peace of mind in knowing that this list was truly created from the disabled perspective, and therefore includes the best possible portrayals available of people with disabilities.

I want to know: Are there any characters on this list that your child can relate to? Are there any shows on here that you hadn't considered showing to your child before now? Are there any really great characters that they missed? Let me know in the comments below.
